SURAT: In an age when Navratri celebrations at many venues come with hefty entry fees, the Anavil community in Surat has kept the spirit of togetherness alive by organising nine nights of Garba exclusively for its members, free of cost. For the past 15 years, the Dayalji Anavil Kelavani Mandal has been bringing the community together through a celebration that blends tradition, cultural pride and social bonding.

The annual Navratri festival offers a welcoming space for Anavil men, women, youngsters and senior citizens to participate in Garba or simply enjoy the festivities as spectators. There is no entry fee, making the celebration accessible to community members across age groups.

Organisers follow a straightforward entry process, with members required to present their government-approved identity cards at the gate. The arrangement helps ensure that the festivities remain focused on the community while maintaining orderly access to the venue.

“This is a celebration organised by the community, for the community. The idea is to bring our people together, preserve our traditions and give every generation an opportunity to participate,” said a community representative.

Community participation beyond Garba

The nine-day celebration is also an example of collective responsibility. Community members contribute towards arrangements, including sponsoring drinking water for all nine nights. Such contributions are often acknowledged through banners at the venue, while other members make donations to support the event.

Food stalls offering a variety of snacks add to the festive atmosphere, giving families and friends an opportunity to spend time together beyond the Garba ground.

Safety and compliance remain important aspects of the celebration. Organisers ensure adherence to local administrative guidelines and receive cooperation from the authorities. Ambulance services are also arranged to respond to medical emergencies during the festivities.

Beyond cultural celebrations, Navratri has also become an occasion for social connections within the community. According to community members, the festivities sometimes lead to five to 10 young men and women entering matrimony, with the blessings of elders.

Anavil community’s roots in South Gujarat

The Anavil community has a longstanding presence in Surat and other parts of South Gujarat, particularly in the districts of Surat, Navsari and Valsad. Traditionally associated with agriculture, education and public service, the community has also developed a reputation for valuing learning and intellectual pursuits.

Although relatively small in numbers, Anavils have contributed to the region’s educational, social and professional life. Educational institutions and community organisations have played a role in promoting literacy, supporting students and maintaining cultural traditions.

The Dayalji Anavil Kelavani Mandal reflects this emphasis on education and community welfare. Its nine-night Navratri celebration extends that spirit beyond classrooms and formal institutions, creating a shared platform where cultural traditions are passed on to younger generations.

For the Anavil community, the festival is therefore more than an annual Garba gathering. It is an expression of collective identity, generosity and belonging, sustained through 15 years of participation and shared responsibility.
