Gandhinagar: Swarrnim Startup and Innovation University marked the upcoming Rakshabandhan at the university campus with a strong message on Doctors’ & women’s safety. At least 900 students from Medical and paramedical faculties of Homeopathy, Ayurveda, Physiotherapy and Nursing affiliated with Swarrnim Startup and Innovation University, who will be future doctors, along with 200 faculty and staff members came together to take a pledge to protect and safeguard women on and off campus and safeguard the profession of doctors and paramedics.
The initiative was taken by the university in solidarity with the tragic case of a Kolkata-based doctor who was recently raped and murdered. The university community felt compelled to act and raise awareness about the issue of women’s safety, not just within educational institutions and campuses but across public spaces.
Students and faculty at Swarrnim Startup and Innovation University celebrated Rakshabandhan with sensitivity in light of the current events, embracing the festival’s true essence.
Traditionally symbolising the bond of protection, students and faculty from engineering, agriculture, science, pharmacy, design, and business departments tied Rakhi to their peers and faculty in the medical and paramedical fields, particularly women, pledging to protect and support them always
Commenting on the initiative, Mr Adi Jain, Vice President, Swarrnim Startup and Innovation University, said, “As we approach Rakshabandhan, a festival that symbolises protection and care, Swarrnim Startup and Innovation University stands united in our commitment to the safety and dignity of women, both on and off our campus. The tragic incident involving a young doctor in Kolkata has deeply shaken our community. At Swarrnim, we believe that every individual, especially those in the medical and paramedical fields, deserves to work and take education in a safe, secure and dignified environment. We are committed to ensuring that this pledge is more than just words—it is a call to action that we will uphold every day.”
As part of the initiative, every member of the Swarrnim community pledged to create a safe, secure and dignified environment for women employees at all levels. The pledge is a proactive initiative of the university to build and encourage a culture of respect and dignity on campus.
Shreya Pandya, a Nursing Officer at Swarrnim University said, “In India, we celebrate numerous festivals from Shravana to Navratri to Diwali, where goddesses are revered with great devotion. However, the reverence seems superficial when such grievous incidents occur in our country. True respect for women must be instilled in society, transcending mere rituals of worship. Before bowing to idols, both men and women should learn to honour the dignity and rights of every woman. We stand united in demanding justice for the doctor in Kolkata.”
