VADODARA,GUJARAT : Vadodara’s recent rollout of smart electricity meters has been met with a wave of consumer frustration, highlighted by a resident receiving a staggering ₹9.24 lakh bill for a single month.

Rahish, a resident of Subhanpura, was left bewildered after receiving an SMS from Madhya Gujarat Vij Corporation Limited (MGVCL) stating his outstanding balance. Upon investigation, MGVCL acknowledged an error in their billing system, correcting the actual amount to a more reasonable ₹1,037.

This incident, however, is just one chapter in a growing saga of issues plaguing Vadodara’s smart meter implementation. Another resident from the same area, accustomed to a monthly bill of around ₹2,000, received a similarly inflated bill exceeding ₹9 lakh.  This resident, who rents out a flat, further emphasized the lack of communication by MGVCL,  stating they were unaware of any smart meter installation.

These experiences reflect the broader concerns surrounding the rollout. MGVCL has installed 25,000 meters across the city, but many users report prepaid amounts of ₹2,000 being depleted within a week.  “The app constantly prompts us to recharge and disconnects power if the balance falls below -₹300,” said sources. “The new system also charges a higher rate per unit, further straining our pockets. Disconnections at inconvenient hours and rapid depletion of recharge amounts add to the problems.”

The entire process, initiated during the election period, has been marred by accusations of inadequate communication. Residents claim they were not properly informed about the installation or the implications of the switch to prepaid meters. While MGVCL views smart meters as a progressive step, many consumers see them as a source of daily aggravation. With complaints pouring in from across the city, MGVCL faces the challenge of addressing these concerns and ensuring a smoother transition to the new system.
