Surat | Gujarat — The Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry 9SGCCI0 has written a letter to the District Collector of Surat, Dr. Saurabh Pardhi (IAS), requesting immediate steps to be taken to remove the difficulties faced in providing LPG gas cylinders for household use to the laborers working in the diamond and textile sectors in Surat. .

SGCCI president  Nikhil Madrasi said that according to the representation made to the Collector, approximately 60 to 80 percent of the total labor population working in Surat city are migrant laborers from other districts and states. Most of them do not have local ration cards of Surat, due to which they have to face great difficulties in getting household LPG gas connection.

In the current situation, the shortage of gas cylinders and the obstacles arising in its availability may spread discontent among the working class. In such a situation, the possibility of reverse migration i.e. laborers going back to their hometowns may increase, which can create a serious situation for textile, diamond and other industries of Surat. To solve this problem, the chamber has requested the collector to implement a system of allocating LPG gas cylinders to laborers on the basis of Aadhaar card instead of ration card. Since Aadhaar card is an acceptable identity proof everywhere today, laborers can easily get gas facilities.

The SGCCI has demanded that the district collector take immediate and appropriate action on this issue and provide relief to the laborers, so that the laborers can get basic facilities.
