Rajkot : Indian cricket team’s celebrated all-rounder, Ravindra Jadeja, has officially entered the political arena by joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The announcement was made by his wife, Rivaba Jadeja, who is a BJP MLA representing the Jamnagar North constituency. Rivaba shared the news on social media, revealing that Jadeja had taken up BJP membership as part of the party’s ongoing National Membership Campaign.

Jadeja, known for his all-round prowess on the cricket field, recently announced his retirement from T20 International cricket following the 2024 T20 World Cup. With this move, he has signaled a shift towards active participation in politics, a path he had been edging toward through his consistent support for his wife’s political endeavors.

Campaigning for the BJP

Ravindra Jadeja has long been involved in the political landscape, often seen campaigning alongside Rivaba during election seasons. His presence in BJP’s rallies and roadshows has added a star power to the party’s campaigns. With his decision to officially join the BJP, Jadeja’s involvement in the party’s activities is expected to increase, positioning him as a high-profile figure within the political space.

The announcement of Jadeja’s political debut comes at a pivotal moment, as the Bharatiya Janata Party launched its National Membership Campaign on September 3, aiming to enroll over two crore new members from Gujarat. The state’s Chief Minister, Bhupendra Patel, became a primary member on the first day, with Jadeja joining the drive soon after.

BJP’s Nationwide Membership Drive

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the BJP’s 2024 National Membership Campaign on September 2 in New Delhi, taking party membership by giving a missed call. Addressing the workers at the launch, PM Modi emphasized the importance of following the BJP’s constitution as the party grows its base ahead of future elections. Ravindra Jadeja’s entry into politics and the BJP comes at a time when the party is working to bolster its membership numbers and secure influential leaders across various sectors.

Jadeja’s Retirement from T20 Cricket

Ravindra Jadeja’s entry into politics follows closely on the heels of his retirement from T20 International cricket after an impressive career. Having represented India in 74 T20 matches, Jadeja became a key player known for his sharp bowling and dynamic fielding. His career highlights include a standout performance of taking 3 wickets for 15 runs in a match. Despite his retirement from T20s, Jadeja remains committed to playing One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Test matches for India, continuing his cricketing journey in the longer formats.

His T20 retirement comes alongside similar announcements from prominent Indian cricketers Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, both of whom have also retired from the shortest format after the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Future in Politics

With Ravindra Jadeja’s immense popularity and his wife Rivaba already holding a significant political role in Gujarat, his transition into active politics is poised to be smooth. Many political observers see his entry as a strategic move by the BJP, utilizing Jadeja’s celebrity status and public goodwill to strengthen the party’s presence in Gujarat and beyond. As the BJP continues its membership drive, Jadeja’s involvement may attract new members to the party, adding to its grassroots strength.
