RAJKOT : A 19-year-old student died after allegedly jumping from the 10th floor of the girls’ hostel at Marwadi University on Morbi Road in Rajkot on Thursday, leaving the campus shaken and raising questions over the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The deceased was identified as Alla Venkatesh Saubarnika, a native of Andhra Pradesh and a second-year Computer Engineering student specialising in Artificial Intelligence.
The incident reportedly occurred around 10 am at the university’s ‘A’ Wing hostel. Following the incident, university authorities alerted emergency services and an 108 ambulance was called.
Varghese Nidheesh, Deputy Registrar of Marwadi University, said the student was immediately taken to hospital.
“After we received information about the incident, an 108 ambulance was called and she was rushed to the hospital. Doctors examined her and declared her dead,” Nidheesh said.
The incident has left fellow students and staff shocked. However, the circumstances that allegedly led to the student taking the extreme step remain unclear.
“There is no information at present regarding the reason behind the incident,” university authorities said.
Police are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the death and gather information from hostel authorities, students and others who may have knowledge of the events preceding the incident.
The case has once again brought attention to the need for timely emotional support and accessible counselling services for students living away from their families.
Authorities are likely to investigate all aspects of the incident before determining the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
