Hazira/Surat (Gujarat) [India], August 6: INS Malvan, the Indian Navy’s latest indigenously built Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Watercraft (ASW-SWC), has been built using 100% specialised steel supplied by ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) from its Hazira facility, bringing a moment of pride for Surat and reinforcing the city’s contribution to India’s strategic and defence capabilities.

  • 100% specialised steel for Indian Navy vessel produced at AM/NS India’s Hazira facility
  • Hazira manufacturing capabilities support India’s growing defence self-reliance
  • Latest milestone places Surat at the heart of another national achievement

Commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 22, 2026 at Karwar, Karnataka, the vessel showcases the advanced manufacturing capabilities developed at Hazira. The milestone highlights how steel produced in Surat is supporting India’s growing defence manufacturing ecosystem and maritime security ambitions.

The achievement places Surat at the epicentre of yet another national milestone, with steel manufactured in Hazira contributing to a key Indian Navy platform. As India advances its defence self-reliance agenda, Hazira continues to demonstrate how world-class manufacturing capabilities developed in Surat are supporting projects of national importance. From contributing to some of India’s most important infrastructure projects to supporting frontline naval assets, Hazira has emerged as a key manufacturing hub powering the nation’s development, strategic interests and self-reliance ambitions. The contribution to INS Malvan further strengthens Surat’s position as an important partner in India’s journey towards indigenous defence manufacturing and national security.

Mr. Ranjan Dhar, Director & Vice President – Sales & Marketing, AM/NS India, said:

“The commissioning of INS Malvan is a proud milestone for AM/NS India’s Hazira operations, where the specialised steel for the vessel was produced. This achievement reflects the advanced manufacturing capabilities, technical expertise and quality standards developed at Hazira. We are proud that steel produced in Surat is contributing to the Indian Navy’s modernisation and supporting India’s vision of becoming self-reliant in defence manufacturing.”

Built by Cochin Shipyard Limited, INS Malvan is the second of eight Mahe-class ASW-SWCs and the second vessel of its class to enter service with the Indian Navy. With more than 80% indigenous content, the programme supports the Government of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat initiatives while demonstrating the country’s growing capabilities in naval design, engineering, systems integration and defence shipbuilding. Designed for underwater surveillance, anti-submarine warfare, mine warfare and coastal security operations, INS Malvan will play an important role in safeguarding India’s coastline and maritime interests.

AM/NS India is supplying 100% of the specialised steel required for the fleet of eight ASW-SWCs being built for the Indian Navy. The company has also supplied specialised steel for several key naval platforms, including INS Visakhapatnam and INS Surat. Beyond defence applications, steel produced at Hazira has contributed to some of India’s most significant infrastructure projects, including the Chenab Railway Bridge, Anji Khad Railway Bridge, Bogibeel Bridge and the India-based Neutrino Observatory.

From strengthening India’s maritime security to enabling landmark national infrastructure, these projects underline the growing role of Hazira-manufactured steel in supporting the country’s strategic and developmental priorities while showcasing Surat’s contribution to nation-building on a truly national scale.
