Surat : In a momentous development for the diamond industry and the city of Surat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has graciously accepted an invitation to inaugurate the world’s largest office building, the Surat Diamond Bourse (SDB), in December 2023. The news comes after a delegation of prominent figures from the Surat diamond industry met the Prime Minister in New Delhi and extended the invitation on Wednesday.

Dinesh Navadia, a member of the SDB management committee, revealed that during the meeting with PM Modi at his office, they had detailed discussions about the diamond industry’s state and the imperative need to develop Surat into an international airport. Addressing these issues, Prime Minister Modi has committed to upgrading Surat’s airport to international standards, which will undoubtedly boost the city’s connectivity and economic prospects.

The delegation led by Gujarat BJP Chief CR Paatil including Vallabh Lakhani, chairman of Kiran Gems, Govind Dholakia, chairman of Shree Ramkrishna Exports, Sevantibhai Shah chairman of Venus Jewels, Lalji Patel, chairman of Dharmanandan Diamonds etc. met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Wednesday.

Surat, known as the world’s fastest-growing city and the economic capital of Gujarat, is set to witness a landmark transformation with the inauguration of the Surat Diamond Bourse. The event holds significant importance, as the city currently has only one international flight route to Sharjah, operating three days a week. The lack of direct air connectivity to Mumbai, considered India’s economic capital, has been a longstanding challenge for the city’s economic growth.

The success of the Surat Diamond Bourse hinges on its international air connectivity to key destinations such as Dubai, Antwerp, London, and New York. With the Prime Minister’s commitment to enhancing the airport’s facilities, this ambitious project is expected to thrive and play a pivotal role in the global diamond trade.

The SDB diamond bourse committee, in their efforts to demonstrate the project’s readiness, submitted a list of 450 diamond industrialists, traders, and businessmen who have eagerly pledged to open their offices on November 21, ahead of PM Modi’s anticipated visit. The committee expressed their optimism that by the time the Prime Minister arrives, the Surat Diamond Bourse will already be operational, symbolizing the city’s readiness to embrace this monumental initiative.

The Surat Diamond Bourse is slated to become a bustling hub for the diamond trade, housing some of the most prominent players in the industry. With its world-class infrastructure and state-of-the-art facilities, the SDB aims to elevate India’s status as a global diamond powerhouse, facilitating seamless trade and exchanges with international markets.

As anticipation builds for the grand inauguration, the city of Surat eagerly awaits the arrival of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to witness this historic moment that will forever shape the city’s economic destiny and cement its position on the world stage. The SDB inauguration is not just a celebration of Surat’s prosperity but also a testament to India’s resilience and ingenuity in the global marketplace.
