Surat | Gujarat — A tragic newborn death at Kiran Hospital—a medical institution built on crores of donations from Surat’s diamond industry—has sparked massive outrage, with grieving family members alleging gross medical negligence and systemic apathy.
What was meant to be a moment of joy turned into devastation when a baby died shortly after delivery, triggering chaos inside the hospital premises in Katargam. Angry relatives accused doctors of failing to provide timely treatment, raising uncomfortable questions about accountability in one of the city’s most reputed healthcare facilities.
According to the family, the pregnant woman was admitted around 10 am, but no significant medical intervention was initiated for hours. “We kept asking the doctors, but no one gave clear answers. Even for medicines, we had to wait for hours. No one was paying attention,” said Rahul Kataria, the father of the newborn.
He further alleged shocking negligence in handling the case. “At first, they told us everything was normal. Then suddenly, within minutes, they said the baby had no heartbeat. In just 10 minutes, they told us our child was gone. We received no proper treatment,” he said, demanding strict action against the doctors involved.
Another family member, Komal Ghoghari, echoed similar concerns. “Even after admission, no treatment started till late afternoon. When the baby’s condition worsened, they rushed for a cesarean. But within minutes, they declared the baby dead. This is clear negligence,” she alleged.
The situation escalated quickly as furious relatives created a ruckus inside the hospital, forcing police intervention. A team from Katargam police station rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Police Inspector B.K. Chaudhary confirmed that a case of accidental death has been registered. “The body has been sent for postmortem. The exact cause of death will be known after the report, and further action will be taken accordingly,” he said.
The incident has once again put Kiran Hospital under the scanner, with citizens questioning how a premier institution—funded by contributions from leading diamond companies—could face such serious allegations of negligence.
“No one takes responsibility here. Patients suffer while staff remain indifferent. This hospital’s reputation is no longer what it used to be,” alleged a relative, reflecting the growing anger among the public.
The victim’s family has demanded cancellation of the doctors’ licenses and strict legal action. Meanwhile, no official statement has been issued by the hospital administration so far.
