New Delhi —– A political storm erupted outside Parliament on Wednesday as Umesh Patel, Member of Parliament (MP) from Daman and Diu, staged a vociferous demonstration against Union Territory Administrator Praful Patel, accusing him of running the territory in a dictatorial manner.
Patel was joined by several parliamentarians, including Sudhakar Singh, Chandrashekhar Azad, Sudama Prasad, Vishal Dadi, and Asaduddin Owaisi, in demanding Praful Patel’s immediate removal. The protest took place at the historic Makar Gate of Parliament, where the leaders raised slogans, held placards, and accused the administrator of gross misuse of power.
“Why 9 years of rule for an administrator?”
Addressing the media during the protest, Umesh Patel questioned the extraordinary tenure of Praful Patel. “When the Prime Minister and the President of India have a tenure of five years, why is Praful Patel still in power after more than nine years? This is nothing but a mockery of democracy,” Patel said.
The protesting MPs alleged that the people of Daman, Diu, and Dadra Nagar Haveli are being subjected to authoritarian governance under Patel’s prolonged administration. Placards carried by the protestors read: “Remove DNH and the tyrannical administrator of Daman and Diu.”
Opposition leaders extend support
Prominent opposition MPs such as Asaduddin Owaisi also backed Umesh Patel’s demand, describing the situation as an “attack on democratic principles.” Owaisi remarked, “No administrator should be allowed to function indefinitely without accountability. People’s rights and representation must come first.”
Chandrashekhar Azad echoed similar sentiments, saying that the prolonged tenure of an unelected administrator erodes the federal spirit of the Constitution.
A growing controversy
This is not the first time Praful Patel has faced criticism. Over the years, opposition leaders and local residents have accused him of high-handed governance, controversial land policies, and lack of transparency. Wednesday’s protest marks the most high-profile demonstration yet, with sitting MPs demanding urgent government intervention.
Umesh Patel warned that if the government does not act, he will intensify the agitation. “The people of Daman and Diu will not remain silent. This struggle is for democracy, accountability, and justice,” he said firmly.
