Surat : Mobile snatchers have become a growing menace in Surat city, with a recent surge in incidents targeting the family members of Congress leaders. Following the high-profile theft of Congress MLA Dr. Tushar Chaudhary’s wife’s mobile phone on Ghod Dod Road, another incident occurred on Saturday when the son of Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee’s (GPCC) General Secretary, Darshan Naik, fell victim to a similar crime.

The theft took place at SNS Atria in Vesu, where the mobile snatchers seized the opportunity to steal the mobile phone from Darshan Naik’s son’s car. Shiv Naik promptly lodged a complaint at the Vesu police station, providing all the necessary details surrounding the incident. Darshan Naik, a prominent Congress leader actively involved in the cooperative sector in Surat district, serves as the director of Sayan Sugar factory and is a former member of the Surat District Panchayat.

The successive incidents have posed a serious challenge for the Surat city police, who now face the pressing task of apprehending the mobile snatchers. What adds to the concern is that the thefts have specifically targeted the family members of Congress leaders. Curiously, Gujarat’s Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi has remained silent on the matter, despite the fact that the mobile phones were stolen from the Majura Gate constituency, represented by Sanghavi as the BJP MLA.

Expressing his concern over the escalating situation, Darshan Naik, the General Secretary of GPCC, called the spree of thefts unfortunate and highlighted the audacity of the criminals operating in Surat city. He stated, “It is very unfortunate that the criminals have gone berserk in Surat city, which is the economic capital of Gujarat. Forget about the common citizens; the criminals are not leaving the elected representatives in the Gujarat Assembly and political leaders.”

The incidents have raised questions about the effectiveness of the Surat city police’s efforts in curbing such crimes. Local residents and Congress leaders are demanding swift action and heightened security measures to protect both the general public and elected officials from the menace of mobile snatchers. Concerns have also been raised about the possibility of a larger criminal network behind these targeted thefts.

With the mobile phones of Congress leaders’ family members being snatched and stolen within the span of just two days, it is crucial for law enforcement agencies to prioritize the investigation and bring the culprits to justice. The safety and security of citizens, including elected representatives, should be a top priority for the authorities, ensuring that such incidents do not recur in the future.
