Surat | Gujarat — A major fire broke out at the Raj textile market located at Parvat Patiya area in the diamond city of Surat. Over 20 textile shops have been gutted in the massive fire that started at about 7 am on Wednesday.

Sources informed that more than 15 fire tenders rushed at the Raj textile market in the morning when the fire started on the sixth floor of the market. It took more than five to six hours to douse the fire, but there is a rush among the traders again. The fire broke out in the lift on the ground floor of the textile market and spread to the seventh floor. Due to which the fire brigade call was announced. The fire was brought under control around 11 o’clock and the cooling work was going on when two shops caught fire again. Efforts have been made to control the ongoing fire.

During the operation to control the fire, two firemen became unconscious and were shifted for treatment and a marshal was also injured. It is feared that traders may have lost goods worth lakhs of rupees in the fire. However, the exact figure of damage will be known only after the fire is completely controlled.

Raj Textile Market built in 2020, BU permission granted in 2021

Raj textile market built in 2020 And in 2021, BU permission was given by the municipality. There are three buildings of Raj Textile Market. In which there are more than 126 shops in one building. More than 20 of these shops have caught fire. The fire which started from the ground floor spread to seven floors.

Difficulty in controlling the fire

The fire department officials have been facing difficulty in controlling the massive fire. Efforts are going on to take the fire under control.

The lives of traders having shops in the market were put to rest.

Gaful Patel, a textile trader whose shop is located on the 6th floor of Raj Textile Market said that his shop is situated on the sixth floor and the fire has become uncontrollable and has reached seven levels. On one side there are seven shops on the seventh floor and on the other side there are also seven shops. Seven shops on one side are completely destroyed and goods worth lakhs of rupees have been gutted.

The wiring from the ground floor to the seventh floor had reached the top. The fire had also spread to the shops where the wiring was going. The power was cut off by the fire department first. The shops inside the building have a huge storage area inside the shops where a large amount of synthetic cloth was kept. Since the synthetic cloth has caught fire, the fire department is facing difficulty in controlling the fire.  Since it is a synthetic cloth, its smoke is also toxic, so the fire fighters are forced to wear oxygen masks to fight the fire.
