Ahmedabad : Marwadi University, through its Center for Innovation, Incubation and Research (MUIIR), has marked World IP Day 2024 by achieving a significant milestone in India’s intellectual property landscape. With the filing of 100 patents to mark the day, Marwadi University has reiterated its commitment to fostering innovation.

World Intellectual Property Day is observed annually on 26 April. The event was established by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2000 to raise awareness about patents, copyright, trademarks, and designs, how they impact one’s daily life and to honour the creativity, and the contribution made by creators and innovators across the globe.

Globally, 34.57 lakh patents were filed in 2022, according to WIPO statistics. According to the India Patent office, in the fiscal year 2022-23, some 80,211 patents were filed. This underlines the urgent need for recognising and patenting innovations and ideas in India.

Recognizing the importance of IPR protection in fostering and encouraging innovations among students, Marwadi University has taken proactive measures to promote awareness and facilitate the filing and grant of patents with this event.

The filing of 100 patents on World IP Day 2024 is not merely a symbolic gesture but a tangible demonstration of Marwadi University’s commitment to driving innovation in line with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations. These patents offer a diverse range of solutions to address critical challenges in various sectors including healthcare, sanitation, infrastructure, and climate action.

Some of the notable innovations include an image processing-based disease detection system rooted in Ayurvedic principles, a portable urination device utilizing agricultural residue to combat urinary tract infections and air pollution, and a hospital bed shield for maintaining a controlled environment during patient care.

Additionally, Marwadi University has developed transformative technologies such as an electrical stimulator for stroke rehabilitation, nano-cellulose fibers for water purification, and smart agriculture systems to enhance farm productivity sustainably.

Interestingly, parents of students who are involved with several industrial sectors also helped come up with problem statements for which students have brought up solutions through innovations.

Marwadi University has started to work in transferring these innovative solutions and IPRs to interested industries, institutes as well as society. Several such technologies in the form of IPRs have also been transferred to interested industries as well as institutes and resulted in generation of revenue for innovators.

The university along with the Student Startup and Innovation Policy (SSIP) of the state government have collectively spent Rs 18 lakh for filing patents. A majority of patents are initiated by the Faculty of Engineering.

“At Marwadi University, we are committed to fostering a conducive ecosystem for innovation and intellectual property protection. The university’s relentless pursuit of excellence in research and innovation is reflected in our concerted efforts to secure patents and drive societal impact. Through initiatives like World IP Day celebrations, we aim to inspire a new generation of innovators who can steer a positive change in our society,” said Dhruv Marwadi, Trustee, Marwadi University

Over the past two years, the university’s MUIIR center has filed more than 210 IPRs, with an impressive 75% success rate in securing grants from the IP office. This initiative reflects Marwadi University’s dedication to nurturing a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship among its students, faculty, and industry partners.
