The latest Indian Cyber Security Skilling Landscape Report 2025–26, released by the Data Security Council of India (DSCI) and the SANS Institute, highlights a widening disconnect between rising industry demand and the availability of skilled cybersecurity professionals.

Cybersecurity hiring crisis deepens

The report found that 73 per cent of enterprises and 68 per cent of cybersecurity service providers are struggling to find qualified professionals. Most organisations reportedly require between one and six months to fill cybersecurity positions, reflecting the growing pressure on recruitment across the sector.

Experts say the shortage is becoming more severe as businesses move toward cloud-native systems, AI-powered workflows, and API-driven digital platforms.

Skill mismatch becoming a major concern

Beyond the shortage in numbers, companies are also facing difficulties finding candidates with practical expertise. Around 63 per cent of enterprises and 59 per cent of service providers said applicants often lack hands-on cybersecurity skills required for modern security operations.

The report also noted a shortage of professionals with cross-domain experience in areas such as cloud security, identity management, applications, and infrastructure protection.

AI security roles now in high demand

As artificial intelligence adoption expands, demand for specialised AI security professionals is rapidly increasing. Nearly 83 per cent of organisations identified AI and generative AI security skills as critical for future operations, while 78 per cent reported strong demand for AI security engineers.

At the same time, more than 60 per cent of enterprises are already running active AI and GenAI projects, significantly increasing potential cyber risks and attack surfaces.

Critical cybersecurity roles remain difficult to fill

Certain specialised positions are proving especially hard to recruit for, including security architects, OT/ICS security experts, and threat intelligence analysts. Industry demand for these roles continues to outpace available talent.

The report also highlighted rising retention challenges, with many organisations losing skilled professionals to competitors offering higher salaries and better career growth opportunities.
