Gandhinagar | Gujarat — Indian Institute of Teacher Education (IITE), located in Gandhinagar, has significantly expanded its academic structure with the establishment of seven new university schools. Established in 2010, the prestigious institution has taken this historic step in line with the successful implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The institute is now steadily advancing towards becoming a “University of National Importance” while embracing a multidisciplinary academic model.

Based on the details provided, the primary objective of this expansion is to provide students with a holistic education, promote a skill-oriented curriculum, and encourage advanced research and innovation.

Providing details in this regard, Dr Mehul Dave, Director, Indian Institute of Teacher Education (IITE) stated that the Indian Institute of Teacher Education is poised to become India’s first university dedicated to training and developing AI educators. As part of the initiative to transform IITE into a “University of National Importance,” the State Government has allocated a grant of Rs. 127 crore for the development of new academic buildings and hostel facilities.

Widening the scope of teacher education, the expansion now encompasses not only government school teachers but also mentors and educators from computer education, sports and theatre training, higher education, and the coaching sector, as well as disciplines such as science, languages, social sciences, and physical education.

This expansion has been undertaken with the global transformations in education in mind.

The list of the newly operational 7 schools is as follows:

  1. School of Education in Sciences and Mathematics
  2. School of Education in Humanities and Social Sciences
  3. School of Physical Education, Sports and Yoga
  4. School of Education in Performing Arts and Fine Arts
  5. School of Education in Commerce, Management and Educational Leadership
  6. School of Education in Technology, Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Areas
  7. School of Special Education

Interdisciplinary Research to Gain Momentum

With the introduction of the new academic structure at the Indian Institute of Teacher Education, subjects such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), sports, arts, and management will now be integrated with education alongside science and mathematics. This multidisciplinary approach will enable students to pursue interdisciplinary research through innovative and contemporary learning methods instead of conventional academic models.

Under the new policy framework, students from the science stream will also have the flexibility to choose subjects such as AI or Philosophy as optional courses based on their interests and career aspirations.

New Opportunities in PhD and Research Fields

With this academic expansion, the Indian Institute of Teacher Education will open new opportunities for PhD programmes and advanced research in multidisciplinary fields such as science and technology, Human Science, educational leadership, arts, and sports.

The institution has taken a key step towards developing educators with comprehensive knowledge, strong research abilities, and effective academic leadership, while keeping pace with the changing educational and professional needs of the future.
