Surat | Gujarat — In a significant move to curb the rising incidents of digital fraud and cybercrime in the city, the Cyber Crime Department of the Surat Police has adopted a highly scientific and collaborative approach. Under this special project, students from the prestigious IIM Ahmedabad (IIMA) will work closely with the Surat Police Cyber Cell to conduct an extensive research study on the various facets of digital deception.

It is a matter of local pride that Dr. Pankaj Gandhi and Mr. Karnav Mehta, both residents of Surat and current students of the PGDM (Data Analytics) program at IIM Ahmedabad, will be spearheading this research.

Key Highlights of the Study:

Advanced Analytics: The duo will employ Advanced Data Analytics Tools to perform a granular analysis of existing fraud cases reported in the city.

Case Reconstruction: The study will involve a deep dive into solved crimes handled by the Surat Cyber Cell to understand the investigative techniques used and the success patterns identified.

Identifying Modus Operandi: By analyzing large datasets, the researchers aim to pinpoint the evolving patterns of cybercriminals and trace the root causes of these digital breaches.

National Impact: The insights and inferences drawn from this research will be compiled into a comprehensive ‘White Paper.’ This document will be officially submitted to the respective Ministry of the Government of India, serving as a blueprint for drafting national cyber security policies and safety standards based on the Surat model.

The synergy between the technical expertise of these IIM Ahmedabad specialists and the on-ground experience of the Surat Police is expected to provide a robust shield for the digital transactions of Surat’s citizens and contribute significantly to the nation’s cyber-safety framework.

Letter issued by IIM Ahmedabad: The official letter regarding this research study has been issued by IIM Ahmedabad on Monday.

Severity of Cyber Crime: This special research has been conducted by IIM Ahmedabad taking into serious consideration the increasing level of cyber crime in the city.

Meeting with DSP and duration: The process of collecting the necessary data will be started after the meeting with the DSP (Cyber Crime) of Surat Police. The accurate report of this entire research and its results will be released by July-August 2026.
