Ahmedabad | Gujarat — In an effort to strengthen public cybersecurity and combat rising online scams, HDFC Bank has launched a digital safety campaign urging citizens to follow a three-step ‘LBW’ action plan if they fall victim to online or digital fraud. The initiative, which stands for Law Enforcement, Bank, and Wipe, is part of HDFC Bank’s digital fraud awareness drive across India.

‘LBW’ — A Simple Formula to Combat Cybercrime

The ‘LBW’ formula, inspired by cricket terminology, provides a simple and memorable way for citizens to act quickly after being targeted by online scammers:

Law Enforcement: Report the fraud immediately by calling the 1930 helpline launched by the Ministry of Home Affairs and filing a complaint on the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (www.cybercrime.gov.in). Suspicious calls or messages can also be reported on the Chakshu portal (www.sancharsaathi.gov.in).

Bank: Notify your bank immediately to block cards, UPI, or internet banking channels to prevent further losses.

Wipe: Completely wipe and reset your device — including mobile phones, tablets, and laptops — and change all passwords to secure your data.

HDFC Bank urges vigilance against evolving scams

Manish Agrawal, Senior Executive Vice President – Credit Intelligence and Control at HDFC Bank, said,“We urge all customers to stay vigilant while transacting digitally. Fraudsters are becoming increasingly sophisticated and often exploit victims’ emotions through social engineering. Following the LBW steps immediately after a digital fraud can significantly increase the chances of fund recovery and prevent further harm.”

The bank warned against common scams such as “digital arrest” fraud, where criminals impersonate police or government officials to threaten victims, and investment scams promising high returns via fake online platforms.

Other major threats include APK scams, where fraudsters send malicious links disguised as legitimate apps, gaining full access to victims’ devices once installed. These scams exploit human emotions through the GTH method — Greed, Threat, and Help.

Promoting safe digital banking practices nationwide

HDFC Bank continues to lead cybersecurity awareness campaigns across India as part of its Secure Banking Initiative. The bank conducts cyber fraud workshops for customers, law enforcement agencies, self-help groups, senior citizens, and educational institutions to promote responsible online behaviour.

Through these initiatives, HDFC Bank digital fraud awareness programs aim to empower citizens to protect themselves, report crimes swiftly, and build a safer digital ecosystem for all.
