AHMEDABAD : Fresh controversy has erupted in Ahmedabad after allegations surfaced that a suspected drug network operative, reportedly wanted in multiple cases, was briefly detained by the Crime Branch and later released, raising questions about the implementation of Gujarat Police’s ongoing anti-narcotics campaign.

According to reports, the development comes at a time when Gujarat Director General of Police G.S. Malik has directed law enforcement agencies across the state to intensify action against drug traffickers and dismantle narcotics supply chains. While police units have launched aggressive operations in recent months, the latest allegations have triggered debate over whether influential criminal networks continue to enjoy protection.

According to information circulating among local sources, a Crime Branch team allegedly picked up Aamir Khan Pathan from a residential complex in Ahmedabad’s Rakhial area last week. However, claims have since emerged that he was released shortly afterward. As of now, there has been no official statement from the Ahmedabad Crime Branch confirming either the detention or the alleged release.

The allegations have drawn attention because Pathan and his brother, Iqbal alias “Batli,” have long been linked by sources to criminal activities in parts of eastern Ahmedabad. Reports claim that several cases, including those related to narcotics offences, have been registered against the duo over the years.

The brothers have also allegedly been connected to separate incidents involving confrontations with police personnel. One case reportedly relates to an attack on a police officer in the Bapunagar area, while another concerns allegations of attempting to hit a policeman with a vehicle in Gomtipur. The status and outcome of these cases could not be independently verified.

Sources further claim that the alleged network extends beyond Gujarat, with purported links to criminal elements in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Haryana. There are also reports suggesting that one of the suspects may be wanted in connection with a case registered in Madhya Pradesh.

“The state has adopted a zero-tolerance approach against narcotics crime. Any claim involving a wanted suspect must be thoroughly examined and clarified,” said a senior observer familiar with policing matters.

The controversy has fueled demands for transparency from investigating agencies. Citizens and anti-drug campaigners are seeking clarity on whether any detention took place, the legal status of the suspect, and the reasons behind the alleged release.

Until an official response is issued, the episode remains shrouded in uncertainty. However, the allegations have undoubtedly intensified scrutiny of law enforcement efforts as Gujarat continues its high-profile battle against organized drug trafficking networks.
