Ahmedabad : Revving up for a major overhaul, the sprawling 76-kilometer Sardar Patel Ring Road encircling Ahmedabad is poised to expand from its current four-lane layout to an extensive six-lane thoroughfare.

Sources reveal that the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority has greenlit the ambitious project to upscale the SP Ring Road, heralding a significant infrastructure upgrade for the region.

Initially slated for widening in 2019 with an estimated cost exceeding Rs 200 crore, the project encountered delays, reportedly attributed to disagreements over extending toll collection tenures. However, the recent decision marks a pivotal step forward.

Although the commencement date for the expansion remains pending, the endeavor will encompass laying new stormwater lines and strategically placing pedestrian overpasses along the route.

With a staggering count of 3 million vehicles traversing the Ring Road daily, linking six national highways and 11 state highways, the augmentation aims to address burgeoning traffic demands.

The envisioned transformation includes extensive plantation on both flanks of the Ring Road, expanding the existing lanes of 8.5 meters by an additional four meters.

Projections from the Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology’s portal suggest a foreseen 25% surge in traffic volume upon completion of the expansion.

The road, initially conceptualized at a width of 60 meters, aims to alleviate congestion on peripheral routes, segregate regional and urban traffic, and bolster overall connectivity.

“The expansion of the Sardar Patel Ring Road stands as a testament to our commitment to enhancing the region’s infrastructure and easing traffic congestion, benefiting millions who rely on this vital thoroughfare.” Said an officer.

As this ambitious modernization project gears up, anticipation mounts for the enhanced efficiency and improved commuting experience that the expanded Sardar Patel Ring Road promises to deliver.
