Gujarat Police Launches Diwali Traffic Awareness Drive
Instead of the usual ticket book, Gujarat traffic police officers stationed at marketplaces, highways, and major intersections will distribute leaflets detailing the risks of unsafe driving and the importance of traffic rules for the driver and their family’s safety.
Ahmedabad : In a unique initiative to promote road safety during Diwali, Gujarat Police has unveiled a traffic awareness campaign across the state, replacing fines with educational pamphlets to encourage responsible driving.
Instead of the usual ticket book, officers stationed at marketplaces, highways, and major intersections will distribute leaflets detailing the risks of unsafe driving and the importance of traffic rules for the driver and their family’s safety. This approach, which began on October 30 and will run through November 6, emphasizes the value of life and the importance of safeguarding it through adherence to traffic laws.
The decision to implement this awareness drive during Diwali is strategic, as the season brings a surge in road traffic across Gujarat. The heightened movement of vehicles increases the risk of accidents, making it essential to encourage compliance with traffic regulations to prevent accidents and promote safer roads for everyone. Officers will approach motorists found violating common rules like not wearing helmets or seatbelts, overspeeding, driving on the wrong side, and disregarding lane discipline.
Instead of imposing fines, the police will hand drivers informational pamphlets explaining how traffic violations can lead to serious consequences for themselves and others. Each pamphlet highlights real-life impacts of accidents and emphasizes the irreplaceable value of each life, hoping to drive home the message that one’s safety on the road has far-reaching effects on family and loved ones.
According to officials, the campaign’s purpose is to not only enforce traffic rules but to also foster a culture of road safety across Gujarat, particularly during a festive period when celebrations can lead to heightened distraction and risk-taking on the road. The police intend for the symbolic interaction to resonate with citizens more deeply than a mere financial penalty.
Gujarat Police’s Diwali initiative is part of a broader push toward adopting empathetic enforcement strategies aimed at building long-term awareness and behavioral change.
