Gandhinagar : Gujarat has become the first state in India to implement a face authentication application for the purpose of registering for Goods and Services Tax (GST). This innovative system, which was introduced by Kanubhai Desai, the Minister of State for Energy and Petrochemicals, represents a substantial stride forward in the reduction of fraudulent activities and the simplification of the GST registration process.

The face authentication application is a significant advancement in the Gujarat Government’s endeavours to simplify the GST registration process. Until recently, the process of procuring a GST number necessitated biometric verification, which was particularly susceptible to manipulation and scams, particularly among the underprivileged. Fraudsters have exploited the system by enticing individuals into schemes that involve altering their Aadhaar-linked mobile numbers in order to obtain fraudulent GST registrations. The government has suffered substantial revenue losses as a result of the issuance of false bills to pass on phony Input Tax Credit (ITC) through these bogus registrations.

Minister Kanubhai Desai highlighted  the advantages of the new face authentication system, asserting that it will substantially diminish the prevalence of such frauds. “The face authentication application will ensure Aadhaar-based identity verification at GST service centres across Gujarat, making the process more secure and efficient,” according to him. This system is anticipated to safeguard government revenue and preserve the integrity of the tax system by preventing the generation of fraudulent GST numbers.

The Gujarat State Tax Department has meticulously crafted the blueprint for the GST Seva Kendra to effectively prevent bogus invoicing activities. The new facial authentication technology will be employed by the centers to confirm the identities of individuals who are applying for GST registration. It is anticipated that this action will close the loopholes that have been previously leveraged by fraudsters, thereby guaranteeing that only legitimate registrations are processed.

Several instances of fraudulent GST registrations through false documents have been brought to the attention of the government, which has prompted this innovative response. The new system will offer a robust verification process that is challenging to manipulate by integrating Aadhaar-based face authentication. This will aid in the identification and prevention of fraudulent endeavors to obtain GST numbers.

In addition to simplifying the process for legitimate applicants, the introduction of this application also represents a substantial advancement in the fight against tax evasion and fraud. Gujarat’s pioneering initiative is expected to inspire other states to implement comparable measures to improve the security and efficiency of their GST registration processes.
