Gandhinagar | Gujarat — Gujarat has taken a major step toward the country’s next national Census by launching preparations for Census 2027, introducing a first-of-its-kind digital self-enumeration system that allows citizens to submit their own household data online.
At a press conference held at the Government Circuit House in Gandhinagar, the Directorate of Census Operations, Gujarat, unveiled the roadmap for the upcoming Census activities and urged citizens to actively participate in the historic exercise.
“This is a citizen-centric initiative aimed at making the Census more accurate, digital and convenient,” said Director of Census Sujal J. Mayatra while addressing the media.
Self-Enumeration Portal Opens May 17
For the first time in India’s Census history, residents will be able to submit their details through the Self Enumeration portal. Citizens can voluntarily provide information about their homes, household amenities and assets in a secure and simplified manner.
The self-enumeration window in Gujarat will remain open from May 17 to May 31, 2026.
Officials believe the digital participation model will significantly improve accuracy while reducing the burden of field data collection.
“We appeal to every citizen to participate and provide accurate information,” Mayatra said. “Public cooperation is essential for the success of this national exercise.”
Door-to-Door Survey Begins in June
Following the online phase, the traditional House Listing Operations (HLO) will begin across Gujarat from June 1 to June 30, 2026. Trained Census staff will conduct door-to-door visits using a specially designed Houselisting Mobile Application to collect data.
Authorities emphasized that the combination of digital self-reporting and field verification will ensure comprehensive and reliable data collection.
Data Confidentiality Assured
Officials reassured the public that all information gathered during the Census remains strictly confidential under the provisions of the Census Act, 1948.
“The Census plays a crucial role in planning and policy formulation. Citizens’ participation is vital, and their data will remain completely confidential,” Mayatra stressed.
The Census is considered one of the largest administrative exercises in the country, guiding government decisions on infrastructure, welfare schemes and economic planning.
