Gujarat : India’s First Athlete Nutrition Lab opens in Gandhinagar
This state-of-the-art facility in Gandhinagar promises to revolutionize sports performance and tackle the persistent issue of inadvertent doping. "Up to now, we were sending samples halfway across the globe, to Germany or the US, just to understand what our athletes were putting into their bodies," reveals a source at the center, who spoke on condition of anonymity. This reliance on foreign labs was not only time-consuming and expensive, but also raised concerns about data security and potential manipulation.

Gandhinagar : Gone are the days when Indian athletes had to rely on foreign labs to understand the hidden ingredients in their supplements. The National Forensic Science University (NFSU) in Gandhinagar has taken a giant leap forward, establishing India’s first government-run lab dedicated to analyzing the nutritional content of food consumed by athletes.
This state-of-the-art facility in Gandhinagar promises to revolutionize sports performance and tackle the persistent issue of inadvertent doping.
“Up to now, we were sending samples halfway across the globe, to Germany or the US, just to understand what our athletes were putting into their bodies,” reveals a source at the center, who spoke on condition of anonymity. This reliance on foreign labs was not only time-consuming and expensive, but also raised concerns about data security and potential manipulation.
The NFSU lab changes the game entirely. Now, athletes can access precise, reliable analyses of their supplements right here in India. This includes protein bars, powders, energy drinks, mass gainers, fat burners, and any other supplement used for athletic performance. With the ability to detect banned substances and even trace minute amounts of contaminants, the lab offers a crucial safeguard against inadvertent doping.
“Imagine an athlete testing positive for a banned substance right before a major tournament,” the source explains. “Previously, understanding the source of that substance would be a slow and uncertain process. But now, here at NFSU, we can analyze the athlete’s samples immediately, identifying not just the presence of the banned substance, but also its likely source – whether it was intentionally consumed or inadvertently ingested through contaminated food or supplements.”
This game-changing capability goes beyond just ensuring fair play. By identifying the source of banned substances, the lab can help athletes understand any potential blind spots in their dietary routines, allowing them to make informed choices and avoid future complications.
The NFSU lab’s significance is further underscored by its swift rise to international standards. “This is the first lab in India to achieve both ISO 9001 and ISO 17025 certification within a single year. The lab has been set up under MoU between FSSAI and NFSU,” the source proudly adds. These coveted certifications guarantee the lab’s adherence to the highest international standards for quality and competence in nutritional supplement testing.
