Ahmedabad : In a protracted legal saga, the Gujarat High Court has extended the hearing concerning Arvind Kejriwal’s relentless pursuit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s education credentials. Amidst the legal proceedings, Gujarat University has sought additional time to address the matter, offering reassurance to Kejriwal regarding their commitment. A significant development unfolded as the university’s lawyer submitted a leave note, signifying a pivotal moment in the ongoing controversy. The High Court has scheduled the next hearing for April 25, shedding light on the complexities surrounding this contentious issue.

Supreme Court Advocate Abhishek Manu Sanghvi is slated to represent Arvind Kejriwal in the High Court, while Solicitor General Tushar Mehta will advocate on behalf of Gujarat University, highlighting the gravity of the case.

At the heart of this legal battle lies a directive from the Central Information Commission, instructing Gujarat University to disclose PM Modi’s degree to Kejriwal. In response, the university contested the order in 2016, claiming the degree was readily accessible on its website. However, in 2023, the court dismissed Kejriwal’s plea and imposed a fine of 25 thousand rupees on both parties, deeming the disclosure unnecessary.

Undeterred by this setback, Kejriwal filed a review petition challenging the fine and disputing the university’s claim regarding the availability of the PM’s degree online. However, Judge Biren Vaishnav dismissed Kejriwal’s petition, adding another layer of complexity to the legal saga.

Kejriwal’s unwavering commitment to transparency has prompted him to escalate the matter by appealing against the 2016 case. This appeal is set to be heard before a bench comprising Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal and Justice Anirudh Mayee, underscoring the significance of the case in the realm of public scrutiny and accountability.

The prolonged legal battle brings to the fore the broader debate surrounding transparency in public office and the right to access information. Kejriwal’s determination to uncover the truth behind PM Modi’s education credentials reflects a larger discourse on governmental accountability and integrity.
