Gandhinagar  : In a move to strengthen rural health services in Gujarat, the state’s Health Department has decided to prohibit private practice for specialist doctors employed on a contract basis at Community Health Centres (CHCs), sub-district hospitals, and district hospitals.

As compensation for this restriction, the Gujarat government has significantly increased the monthly salary for these doctors, rewarding their exclusive services to public sector institutions.

Previously, the contract-based specialists received a monthly salary of ₹95,000, which is now increased to ₹1.30 lakh per month by the government, marking an estimated 37% hike.

Additionally, for specialists involved in surgical procedures, the government has introduced performance-based incentives. Apart from their monthly salary, these doctors will receive between ₹300 and ₹2,000 per surgery, depending on the complexity of the operation.

For major surgeries in general surgery, orthopaedics, gynaecology, and ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat), doctors will be paid ₹2,000 per surgery and ₹1,250 for minor surgeries. Minor procedures will earn doctors ₹600 and ₹300 per surgery, respectively.

Moreover, contract-based anaesthetists will be eligible for 50% of the incentive amount provided per surgery.

Specialists not involved in surgical procedures will receive incentives according to the existing norms of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY).
