Tapi (Vyara) | Gujarat —- In a shocking case of corruption within Gujarat’s police force, Dy.SP (SCST Cell) Nikita Shiroya and head constable Narendra Gamit have landed in the Anti-Corruption Bureau’s (ACB) net for allegedly demanding a bribe of ₹1.50 lakh from an accused in an atrocity and dowry prohibition case.
What makes the case even more sensational is that Shiroya is closely related to former Surat Mayor Ashmita Shiroya and is the wife of police inspector Nilesh Suhagiya. She is also related to Dr. Praful Shiroya, the former homeguard commandant and well-known figure in Surat.
According to ACB officials, Shiroya and Gamit were investigating a case registered at Kakrapar police station, where the complainant, his family, and two friends were booked under the Atrocity Act and Dowry Prohibition Act. In total, eight people were accused in the matter.
During the investigation, the duo allegedly demanded ₹4 lakh from the complainant to avoid arresting his family members and friends. After negotiations, the deal was settled at ₹1.50 lakh.
“The complainant was unwilling to pay the bribe and instead approached us,” said AV Patel, Assistant Director of ACB Field-3 (Investigation Wing). “A trap was laid under the supervision of our team on Wednesday.”
As per ACB sources, head constable Gamit arrived in a private car at the complainant’s residence in L&T Colony, Kakrapar to collect the bribe. However, suspecting surveillance, he fled the spot without accepting the money, thereby committing a serious offense in itself.
“This case reflects how deeply corruption has seeped into the system,” remarked an ACB officer. “Even senior officers entrusted with handling sensitive atrocity and dowry cases are abusing their power for extortion.”
The entire operation was carried out by trapping officer SN Barot, Police Inspector, ACB Field-3, under the leadership of Patel. Further investigations are underway into the role of both officers.
This incident has sent shockwaves across Tapi and Surat, especially given Shiroya’s influential family ties. Legal experts say the case will test the accountability of Gujarat Police in handling corruption at higher levels.
