BHAVNAGAR,GUJARAT : Bhavnagar, a city-district in Gujarat, has observed a notable rise in applications for International Driving Permits (IDP) over the past few years. According to data from the Regional Transport Office (RTO), the number of applicants seeking IDPs has steadily increased, reflecting a growing trend of individuals planning to drive abroad.

In the last five years, a total of 1327 applicants have registered for IDPs in the Bhavnagar RTO. This translates to an average of approximately three registrations every two days in the city-district.

The statistics reveal fluctuations in application numbers over the years, influenced by various factors such as global events and travel restrictions. In 2019, 177 individuals applied for IDPs, indicating a significant demand for international driving permits. However, amid the global COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the number of applications dropped to 64 as travel restrictions and safety concerns hindered international travel.

As the situation gradually improved, the year 2021 saw a resurgence in IDP applications, with 146 individuals registering for permits. This upward trend continued in subsequent years, with a substantial increase in 2022 and 2023. In 2022, 366 applicants sought IDPs, marking a significant surge compared to the previous year. Remarkably, the number nearly tripled in 2023, with 432 individuals applying for permits.

The trend persists in 2024, with 142 applicants registering for IDPs by May 21, indicating sustained interest in driving abroad among Bhavnagar residents.

Obtaining an IDP involves adhering to specific regulations and procedures, varying from country to country. Some nations require applicants to undergo a multi-step process, while others offer exemptions or direct licensing for individuals holding Indian driving licenses.

The increasing number of IDP applications underlines the growing global mobility and travel aspirations of Bhavnagar residents. Despite challenges posed by the pandemic, individuals are keen on acquiring permits to drive in foreign countries, reflecting a desire for international travel and exploration.
