Ahmedabad, Gujarat  — In a chilling incident that has shocked the city, a four-month-old baby girl was mauled to death by a pet Rottweiler in the Hathijan area of Ahmedabad on Sunday night. The baby’s aunt, who was carrying her, also sustained injuries while trying to save the child.

The tragedy occurred at Radhe Residency near Hathijan Circle. The baby, identified as Rushika—just 4 months and 17 days old—was being taken for a stroll by her maternal aunt. Meanwhile, another resident of the society brought her Rottweiler downstairs, reportedly while distracted on a phone call. In a horrific turn of events, the dog slipped from her grip and pounced on the infant and her aunt.

Eyewitnesses said the baby fell from her aunt’s arms during the struggle, and the Rottweiler viciously mauled her. The aunt tried to intervene but suffered injuries herself. Both were rushed to a hospital, but the baby could not be saved despite emergency treatment.

“This was not just an accident. It was gross negligence,” said a visibly angry resident. “A dangerous breed like a Rottweiler should never be brought into public spaces without full control. A life has been lost because of carelessness.”

The baby’s father, Vipul Dabhi, was inconsolable. “We took every step to protect our child, but we couldn’t protect her from someone else’s irresponsibility,” he said through tears.

The incident has sparked outrage across the residential society and online, with calls for stricter pet ownership laws and enforcement of animal control norms in urban areas. Many residents expressed concern about the lack of accountability and the dangers of bringing aggressive breeds into crowded residential complexes.

Police officials confirmed that a complaint will be lodged at Vivekanandnagar Police Station. “We are recording statements from the victim’s family, the dog’s owner, and eyewitnesses. Strict action will be taken as per the law,” an officer stated.
