BHADERWAH, JAMMU & KASHMIR – After serving the nation in some of the world’s most challenging terrains and contributing to India’s security landscape, retired Indian Army officer and author Col Sunil Singh Parihar better known by his pen name Suniel Parihar, is embarking on a new mission – one centered on creativity, self-discovery, and inner transformation.

His latest initiative, Solace by the Hillside, is an invitation-only sanctuary nestled in the serene hills of Bhaderwah, Jammu & Kashmir. Designed for writers, artists, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders, the space aims to provide an environment where meaningful work can flourish away from the distractions of modern life.
A Life Forged Through Service, Resilience, and Reinvention
Suniel Parihar’s journey is anything but ordinary. A distinguished Army officer who served in the elite Sikh Light Infantry, including deployments in the harsh conditions of Siachen, he spent decades navigating complex operational environments, intelligence assignments, and leadership roles.
His experiences inspired his first book, India’s Spy Agencies: Shaken Not Stirred, which gained significant recognition and was procured in bulk by Army Headquarters for distribution across Army libraries and Rashtriya Rifles units – an uncommon distinction that underscored its relevance and impact.
Alongside his military career, Parihar pursued a Master’s degree in Psychology and developed a deep interest in Positive Psychology. While appreciating modern therapeutic approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), he believes that timeless Indian wisdom, particularly the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita, offers profound insights into resilience, self-mastery, and human potential.
Bridging Military Discipline, Corporate Learning, and Spiritual Growth
Parihar continued to share his experiences through books such as Mission Possible: A Veteran’s Blueprint for Corporate Triumph and Self-Mastery and Heal Yourself To Happiness.
In Mission Possible, he chronicles his transition from military service to the corporate world while introducing pioneering concepts such as AdvenEL (Adventure-based Experiential Learning) and HiMate (High Intensity Military Adventure Training Experience). These initiatives challenged conventional training methods by using immersive experiences to build leadership, teamwork, and resilience.
His work has impacted professionals across industries, including the successful training of over 1,000 Delhi Police personnel ahead of the Commonwealth Games.
Solace by the Hillside: Where Creativity Meets Deep Peace
Today, Parihar’s vision has evolved into Solace by the Hillside. Unlike traditional resorts or commercial retreats, the sanctuary operates strictly through invitation, focusing on meaningful conversations, deep work, reflection, and creative expression.
Located in a heritage village near downtown Bhaderwah, the initiative reflects his belief that creativity thrives when individuals disconnect from noise and reconnect with themselves.
Drawing from military grit, psychological understanding, spiritual practice, and decades of life experience, Suniel Parihar hopes to create a space where creators and leaders can find clarity, purpose, and inspiration.
As India continues to emerge as a global hub for innovation and creativity, Solace by the Hillside represents a unique effort to nurture the minds behind that progress – one thoughtful conversation and one transformative experience at a time.
