Surat, Gujarat – Born with a challenging physical condition that threatened to define his life, Hemil, the son of a farming family from Masad village, faced immense hurdles from day one. A severe cleft lip and underdeveloped palate, medical conditions known as “Cleft Lip and Palate,” made the simplest acts of eating, drinking, and speaking agonizingly difficult. Yet, in a heartwarming testament to the power of government initiatives, Hemil has not only overcome these congenital defects but is now thriving, thanks to two life-changing surgeries provided completely free under Gujarat’s Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) scheme.
His journey from silent struggle to joyful normalcy stands as a beacon of hope for countless families. “My son was born with defects in both his lip and palate. As a farmer with limited income, we constantly worried about the immense cost of surgery,” shared Dharmendrabhai Patel, Hemil’s father, his voice now filled with profound gratitude. “But when Hemil was just seven months old, an RBSK team visited our village for a check-up. They explained the government’s scheme and guided us to U.N.M. Children’s Hospital in Kamrej. It was a true blessing.”
A New Lease on Life
Under the vital RBSK scheme, Hemil underwent his first crucial surgery for the cleft lip when he was only seven months old. The procedure was a resounding success, offering the family a glimpse of a brighter future. However, the palate, a more complex issue, required a second intervention.
“When he turned nine, a second surgery was needed for his palate. Again, without a moment’s hesitation, we received full support under the RBSK scheme,” Dharmendrabhai recounted. “Today, Hemil is perfectly healthy. He’s in Grade 4, plays joyfully with other children, smiles often, and lives a happy, healthy life without any issues in eating, drinking, or speaking. He can do everything any other child can. We are truly grateful to the government for giving our son a healthy life.”
Timely Intervention, Lifelong Impact
Medical professionals involved in Hemil’s care highlighted the critical role of early diagnosis and intervention. “In rare cases like this, timely diagnosis and immediate treatment can truly give a child a normal life,” stated Dr. Runali Kapta, a Medical Officer. “Seeing Hemil fully healthy today brings us immense peace. If this scheme didn’t exist, we can’t imagine the kind of hardship Hemil and his family would have had to endure.”
The RBSK scheme, a flagship health initiative by the Government of India, offers free health check-ups for children aged 0 to 18 years. Crucially, if any serious illness or congenital defect is detected, the scheme covers the cost of necessary treatment or surgery. In Gujarat, this program has already transformed the lives of thousands of children, proving to be a lifeline for families who would otherwise be crushed by overwhelming medical expenses.
