Surat : Surat, known for its resilience, is once again grappling with a devastating fire incident that has laid bare the city’s administrative failures. On February 26, what started as a minor blaze at the Shivshakti Textile Market escalated into an inferno, consuming approximately 700 out of 822 shops over a harrowing 32-hour ordeal. The estimated loss stands at a staggering Rs 850 crore, marking one of the city’s costliest disasters in recent memory.

The tragedy has sparked outrage among Surat’s residents, echoing the haunting memories of past incidents, such as the 2019 Takshashila Arcade fire that claimed 22 young lives. Despite assurances of lessons learned, little has changed in ensuring fire safety protocols and accountability.

Cash Worth Rs 20 Crores Reduced to Ashes

In a heart-wrenching scene amidst the chaos, a trader pleaded desperately with the authorities to salvage Rs 20 crore stored in his shop, crucial funds belonging to various stakeholders. Tragically, bureaucratic protocols prevented any rescue attempts, leaving the trader’s fortunes and livelihood consumed by the relentless blaze.

Devastation Across 700 Shops

The Shivshakti Market, a bustling hub of commerce with 500 shops housing sarees and trade materials, and another 300 dedicated to packaging, now lies in ruins. The fire not only ravaged merchandise but also destroyed essential documents vital for business operations, exacerbating the financial ruin for countless traders.

The Role of Illegal Constructions

Initial investigations point to illegal constructions, particularly the use of tin sheds on the market’s terrace, as a catalyst for the fire’s rapid spread. This unauthorized infrastructure, coupled with lax enforcement of fire safety regulations, created a tinderbox waiting to ignite.

Recurring Failures and Tragic Sequences

The tragedy unfolded against a backdrop of recurrent failures. A previous fire incident on February 25, originating in the market’s basement, should have raised alarms and prompted preventive measures. However, inadequate cooling efforts and suspected electrical mishandling likely reignited the flames the following day, plunging the market into chaos.

Challenges in Fire Suppression

Firefighters faced immense challenges combating the blaze, exacerbated by the market’s layout and structural vulnerabilities. The intensity of the fire forced officials to retreat at several points, hampering efforts to contain the flames effectively across multiple floors.
