Daman | Union Territory — In a development that has sparked outrage across Daman and beyond, the Daman police have registered an FIR against Umesh Babubhai Patel, Member of Parliament from Daman and Diu, for allegedly making objectionable and derogatory remarks during a Facebook Live broadcast on August 28, 2025.

The complaint, filed by Ramkumar Ishwer Shah, a resident of Nani Daman, alleges that Daman and Diu MP Umesh Patel’s remarks were not only derogatory but also insulted IAS and IPS officers, disrespected state officials, and hurt the sentiments of communities from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

Offensive Remarks in Focus

During the live broadcast, Patel allegedly questioned the credibility of IAS, DANICS, and IPS officers, comparing their qualifications to those who pass examinations “through unfair means.” His remarks, as quoted in the complaint, stated that if such officers were educated, they should “drown in a handful of water.”

According to the FIR, these statements were false, misleading, and inflammatory, spreading dissatisfaction and hatred among the people of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, while also undermining public trust in constitutional institutions.

The Nani Daman Police have registered the case under Sections 353(1) and (2) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, 2023, which deal with acts obstructing public servants and spreading disaffection.

Public Backlash and Political Tremors

The issue has quickly escalated into a political flashpoint. Local residents and community representatives from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh living in Daman have condemned the remarks.

“Such words from a sitting Member of Parliament are completely unacceptable. Leaders should unite people, not insult hardworking communities and public servants,” said a community leader in Nani Daman.

Political observers believe the case could dent Patel’s credibility and create a rift between migrant communities and local leadership. A senior analyst remarked, “With elections around the corner, every word matters. This FIR could become a serious political liability for Patel.”

Law and Order Perspective

Police officials have confirmed that an investigation is underway. “We have registered FIR No. 56/2025 against MP Umesh Patel. The investigation will examine the full scope of his remarks and their impact,” said a senior officer at the Nani Daman Police Station.

Legal experts noted that elected representatives are expected to maintain constitutional decorum. “Free speech comes with responsibility. If statements incite hatred or insult communities, the law will take its course,” said Advocate Mehul Shah, a legal expert based in Surat.
