AHMEDABAD : Gujarat University has landed in controversy after ABVP levelled serious allegations of financial irregularities against former Vice Chancellor Neerja Gupta, claiming that the university suffered a financial burden of ₹10.93 crore due to additional salary expenses during her three-year tenure.
Following the complaint, the university has constituted an inquiry committee to examine the allegations and verify the claims.
ABVP alleged that during Neerja Gupta’s tenure from July 2023 to June 2026, several temporary employees were removed and new appointments were made with salaries reportedly five to six times higher than previous pay scales.
“These appointments caused a huge financial loss to Gujarat University. We have demanded an impartial investigation and recovery of the money if irregularities are proved,” said ABVP leader Dhrumil Akhani.
The student organisation also alleged that some appointments were made without required approvals and claimed that individuals linked to the former vice chancellor and her associates were given key positions.
ABVP further claimed that certain employees were appointed on high salaries, including packages reportedly around ₹5 lakh per month, causing additional pressure on the university’s finances.
The university has appointed a three-member committee comprising Syndicate member Hiren Jadhav, IQA Director Professor C.G. Brahmabhatt, and School of Law Head Professor Bhavesh Bharad to investigate the allegations.
Officials said the committee will examine documents, appointment procedures and financial records. If the allegations are found to be true, further legal action, including a possible Crime Branch complaint, may follow.
The inquiry has brought renewed focus on transparency, recruitment practices and financial management in Gujarat’s premier university.
