VadodaraFormer Indian cricketer Anshuman Gaekwad, known for his significant contributions to Indian cricket both as a player and coach, passed away late on Wednesday night at the age of 71. Gaikwad had been battling blood cancer and was receiving treatment in Vadodara. His demise marks the end of an era for many cricket enthusiasts and his contributions to the sport will be remembered fondly.

Gaekwad breathed his last at his residence, where security has been tightened with guards deployed outside his farmhouse on the Sevasi to Mahapura road. His body has been taken to his home, where family members and close friends are gathering to pay their respects. Among the early arrivals were former Indian cricketer Nayan Mongia and BCCI President Roger Binny.

The funeral procession is scheduled to commence at 12 noon today, heading to Kirti Mandir where the last rites will be performed. The presence of numerous cricketing personalities is expected, highlighting the high regard and affection the cricketing community held for Gaikwad.

Geetaben Gaekwad, Head Coach of the Delhi Capital Women’s Team in the IPL, also paid her respects, expressing her deep sorrow at the loss. “Anshuman Gaikwad was not just a former cricketer but a cherished member of our family. His absence will be deeply felt in the cricketing world as we’ve lost not only an international player but an inspiring figure and a great human being,” she stated.

Gaekwad’s legacy in cricket extends beyond his playing days; he also served as the coach and manager of the Indian cricket team. His mentorship and leadership were pivotal in shaping the careers of many cricketers.

Tragically, Anshuman Gaekwad’s father, Dattajirao Gaekwad, also a prominent figure in Indian cricket, passed away just six months ago on February 13, 2024, at the age of 95. The Gaikwad family, having faced two significant losses in a short span, is receiving condolences from the cricketing fraternity and beyond.

Former Indian cricket team captains Mohammad Azharuddin and Dilip Vengsarkar have reached out to the family to offer their support and condolences. Anshuman Gaikwad is survived by his wife Jyothiben, his sons Shatrunjya and Aniruddha, his daughters-in-law Kanan and Savita, and his grandson Vikrant.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed his grief through a tweet, stating, “Deeply saddened by the demise of Anshuman Gaekwad Ji, a legendary cricketer whose cricketing skills enhanced the pride of Indian cricket. My heartfelt condolences are with his family and followers during this hour of grief. Om Shanti.”
