New Delhi [India]: An Enforcement inspector of the Employees Providing Fund Organisation (EPFO) in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for accepting bribe money worth Rs 3 lakh from a complainant for settling the pending Provident Fund (PF) dues on Wednesday.

The accused, according to CBI, demanded a bribe of Rs 4 lakh for settling the pending PF dues of the employees of the complainant’s school. The complainant is a school teacher and he approached the accused for settling the PF dues of his staff members.

It was after the accused demanded a bribe of Rs 4 lakh, the complainant filed a case with the CBI. The complainant had received a notice from the EPFO in Kanpur for submitting documents concerning the pending PF dues of his employees.

The PF of five non-teaching staff was not submitted with the EPFO for the last three years and the complainant showed his willingness to submit the same. However, the Enforcement Inspector demanded Rs 4 lakh for settling the PF dues and threatened that he would impose a heavy fine or penalty if the bribe amount is not paid to him.

CBI sleuths laid a trap at the EPFO office in Kanpur and cause the Enforcement Inspector red-handed while accepting the Rs 3 lakh as the first installment of the bribe from the complainant. The CBI has been conducting searches at the office and residential premises of the accused which led to the recovery of various incriminating documents.

The accused was presented before the special judge, CBI cases in Lucknow where he was remanded in the judicial custody on Wednesday.
