Cyclone Asna Threatens Gujarat: Saurashtra-Kutch On Alert
The weather department has expressed fears that Cyclone Asna may make landfall along the coast of Saurashtra and Kutch. Mandvi taluka of Kutch will be most affected by the storm
Ahmedabad : The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for heavy rain in Kutch, Morbi, Jamnagar, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Porbandar.The weather department has expressed fears that Cyclone Asna may make landfall along the coast of Saurashtra and Kutch. Mandvi taluka of Kutch will be most affected by the storm. Heavy rains with strong winds are also predicted.
Schools and colleges have been ordered to remain closed due to rain. Cyclone Asna in the Arabian Sea has raised concerns.
It may be noted that Kutch usually gets 499 mm of rain but this year it has received 800 mm of rain so far. Not only this, for the first time since 1946, a cyclone may hit Saurashtra Kutch in the month of August. The Meteorological Department believes that this is a very serious matter. If Cyclone Asna takes a severe form, the situation can become extremely dangerous.
In a tweet, the Indian Meteorology department said, “DD over Kachchh & & adjoining areas of Northeast Arabian Sea and Pakistan,about 90 km W-NW of Bhuj (Gujarat).To move W, emerge into NE Arabian Sea and intensify into a CS on 30th Aug. it would continue to move nearly W-SW over NE Arabian Sea away from Indian coast in next 2 days”
Due to the incessant rains following deep depression, there has been floods in many parts of the state. Now, Cyclone Asna may hit the coast of Gujarat. The Central Meteorological Department has warned people to be alert.
More than 35 people have lost their lives in Gujarat due to heavy to heavy rains and floods in the last four days. People have been forced to leave their homes due to floods. NDRF and Air Force are continuously rescuing people trapped in water flow. A large number of people are being shifted to safer places.
However, weather expert Paresh Goswami is saying that Cyclone Asna will weaken and will not have a serious impact on Gujarat. According to Paresh Goswami, the people of Gujarat need not worry as the cyclone will weaken and disperse in six to ten hours and move towards the west.
