Gandhinagar | Gujarat —- A closed-door meeting of the Gujarat BJP state committee at Kamalam on Monday has sent political circles abuzz with speculation, after party president C.R. Paatil hinted at a new state president and an imminent cabinet expansion. The meeting, convened to strategize the upcoming ‘Seva Pakhwadia’ to mark Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday, took an unexpected political turn with Paatil’s remark.

According to BJP insiders present at the meeting, Paatil stated, “We will meet again soon. Gujarat is going to get a new state president, and along with that, the cabinet will also be expanded. My best wishes to those who will find a place in the new team.”

This statement has intensified speculation that the Gujarat BJP could undergo significant organizational and administrative reshuffles in the coming weeks.

Major Hint of Change

The timing of Paatil’s remarks is crucial, as the ruling party gears up for the 2025 Gujarat civic polls and begins preparations for the 2027 Assembly elections. Political analysts believe that the decision to bring in a new state president and expand the cabinet could be aimed at balancing caste equations, strengthening the party’s grassroots machinery, and energizing its ranks.

“Whenever Paatil makes such a statement, it is not casual. It usually reflects a direction set by the central leadership,” said a senior BJP MLA on condition of anonymity. “This signals a clear strategy to refresh both the party and the government before major elections.”

Focus on Seva Pakhwadia

The primary agenda of the meeting was to finalize activities for ‘Seva Pakhwadia’, a fortnight-long outreach program celebrated every year on the occasion of Prime Minister Modi’s birthday. Plans include large-scale blood donation camps, health check-ups, plantation drives, and awareness campaigns across Gujarat.

Despite the importance of the meeting, nearly 50 MLAs were absent, raising questions about internal discipline. However, a strong presence of state office bearers, MPs, and district leaders ensured that planning for the campaign remained on track.

Speculation Over Successors

While no names were officially discussed, political observers point out that two to three senior BJP leaders are being considered for the post of state president, with an emphasis on leaders who can mobilize youth and strengthen the party in rural Gujarat. On the cabinet front, expansion is expected to accommodate younger MLAs and regional representatives who have been lobbying for a bigger role.

Political commentator noted, “This is a well-calculated move. The Gujarat BJP wants to showcase both continuity and renewal. A new president and cabinet reshuffle will help counter anti-incumbency and send a strong message before the polls.”
