MEHSANA : The Chandipura virus has claimed another young life in Gujarat, raising fresh concerns over the spread of the deadly infection. A four-year-old girl from Delwada (Khant) village in Bahucharaji taluka died at Vadnagar Civil Hospital on Tuesday night despite intensive medical treatment. The death is the second Chandipura-related fatality in Mehsana district and takes Gujarat’s overall death toll to 14.

The girl, identified as Dwarika Jigargiri Gosai, developed high fever and vomiting on July 26. Her family first admitted her to a private hospital in Mehsana. As doctors suspected Chandipura virus, her blood sample was sent to a laboratory in Gandhinagar. After the test confirmed the infection on July 27, she was shifted to Vadnagar Civil Hospital for advanced treatment.

“The child was Chandipura positive and was already on ventilator support before she was referred to us,” said pediatrician Dr. Pragyaben. “Her condition was extremely critical. Despite our best efforts, her blood circulation collapsed and she suffered cardiac arrest. We managed to revive her pulse briefly, but she passed away around 8 pm.”

Following the death, health authorities launched an emergency response in Delwada village. Under the supervision of Taluka Health Officer Dr. Kaushik Gajjar, teams conducted door-to-door surveillance in more than 250 houses. Insecticide spraying, wall treatment, and vector control measures have also been intensified to prevent further infections.

Village Sarpanch Govindsinh Solanki urged residents to remain vigilant. “Parents should immediately take children to the nearest health centre if they develop fever, vomiting, dizziness or unconsciousness. Early treatment can save lives,” he said.

The Chandipura virus, spread mainly through infected sand flies, caused widespread concern after claiming 82 children’s lives in Gujarat in 2024. Health experts continue to advise families, especially in rural areas, to seek immediate medical attention if children show sudden neurological symptoms, as early diagnosis and supportive care remain crucial.
