Ahmedabad (Gujarat) : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has charged Mahesh Chaudhary, Assistant Commissioner of Central Goods and Service Tax (CGST) in Gandhidham, and his wife with amassing disproportionate assets during his tenure in office from 2017 to 2021.

During the period 2017 to 2021, the accused allegedly amassed disproportionate assets in the form of large cash, bank balances, movable and immovable properties in his name and the names of family members. Chaudhary amassed property worth approximately Rs.3,71,12,499/-, and the CBI’s search is not yet complete; the CBI is still investigating.

The CBI is currently conducting search operations in more than a half-dozen locations in Gujarat and Rajasthan. The CBI has seized Rs 42 lakh in cash, foreign currency, expensive watches, and property documents from Mahesh Chaudhary.

All of these items have now been seized by the CBI, and their investigations are still ongoing. It is worth noting that a GST officer was previously caught, and that a middleman of a GST officer was recently caught in ACB for taking bribes; it appears that corruption is slowly spreading somewhere in the GST department.
