Building Trust One Litre at a Time: Dhayalan Mohanasundaram’s Story

Erode (Tamil Nadu) [India], July 23: In the heartland of Erode, Tamil Nadu, a quiet revolution in dairy farming and rural livelihoods has been unfolding for four decades. At the center of this journey stands Dhayalan Mohanasundaram, Joint Managing Director of Amirthaa Dairy Private Limited, a second-generation industrialist who has taken a family enterprise rooted in tradition and reimagined it for a modern, quality-conscious India. Amirthaa Dairy’s story began long before spreadsheets and supply-chain software entered the conversation — it began with his father, R. Mohanasundaram, who started as a cycle vendor with a capital of Rs. 750. Today, that humble beginning has scaled into a state-of-the-art, fully automated facility handling about 4 lakh litres of milk per day, spanning Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, Karnataka, Odisha, and West Bengal, and touching the lives of 18,000 farmer families across the region. For Dhayalan Mohanasundaram, stepping into this legacy was never simply about inheriting a business. Armed with a B.Tech in Biotechnology from VIT University, he brought a scientific temperament to an industry that has traditionally leaned on experience and instinct. That blend — technical rigor paired with an inherited understanding of rural supply chains — has come to define his approach to leadership. One of the more understated aspects of Amirthaa Dairy’s growth is how deeply it is woven into the livelihoods of the farming community that supplies it. Thousands of farmer families across hundreds of village-level collection centres depend on timely procurement, fair pricing, and reliable logistics. Under Dhayalan’s stewardship, the emphasis has consistently been on strengthening this chain — investing in cold storage infrastructure, digitising milk quality analysis at the collection point, and ensuring that the journey from udder to doorstep preserves both freshness and trust. This is not incidental to the business; it is the business. A dairy company’s product is only as good as the milk it starts with, and Amirthaa’s continued expansion has depended on treating farmers not as suppliers to be managed, but as partners to be uplifted. Dhayalan’s role extends well beyond the boundaries of a single company. As Managing Director of Dhayalan Breweries and Distilleries Private Limited and Hectare Private Limited, he has diversified into ventures that reflect a broader entrepreneurial ambition — one that looks at agriculture, rural economy, and industry as interconnected systems rather than isolated verticals. His trusteeship at Amirthaa Trust further signals a philosophy in which business success and community responsibility are not separate ledgers, but the same one. He is also a life member of the Indian Dairy Association, reflecting his sustained engagement with the professional and technical community shaping the sector’s future. Running a dairy enterprise of this scale in India is rarely just about production efficiency. It demands constant engagement with regulatory frameworks — food safety certifications, environmental compliance, energy policy, and labour standards, to name a few. Dhayalan has been closely involved in steering Amirthaa Dairy and its associated entities through this landscape, including efforts to secure a sustainable 3 MW solar energy supply for the company’s operations — a move that reflects a longer-term commitment to reducing the environmental footprint of dairy processing at scale. This willingness to engage with policy, litigation, and institutional processes — rather than treat them as obstacles — has arguably been one of the quieter strengths of his leadership style. What distinguishes Dhayalan from many second-generation successors is his refusal to treat the family business as a finished product. Even as Amirthaa Dairy marks four decades of operation, there is a visible appetite for expansion into adjacent industries, exploration of new product categories, and an openness to formal education and upskilling in dairy technology and management — a rare trait among industrialists who might otherwise rest on inherited scale. It is this combination — technical grounding, farmer-first instincts, professional engagement, and a willingness to keep learning — that has positioned Dhayalan Mohanasundaram as a name increasingly associated with the next chapter of Tamil Nadu’s dairy cooperative and private-sector ecosystem alike. Forty years on, Amirthaa Dairy’s story is still being written, and Dhayalan Mohanasundaram is one of its central authors. His journey illustrates something increasingly rare in Indian family businesses: the ability to honour a legacy while actively reshaping it for a future defined by sustainability, technology, and community trust.
