Valsad | Gujarat — : A frightening and unprecedented scene unfolded in the Arabian Sea near the Gujarat coast, sending shockwaves through the fishing community and triggering an emergency response from multiple agencies. Fishermen out at sea were stunned to see huge bubbles violently rising to the surface, making the water appear as if it was boiling—an image many described as nothing short of a volcanic eruption in the middle of the ocean.
Videos of the incident, showing continuous gas-like bubbles erupting from a fixed spot in the sea, quickly went viral on social media, sparking fear and speculation. Alarmed fishermen immediately raised the issue with Dinesh Tandel, president of the Gujarat Fishermen’s Association, who alerted coastal and fisheries authorities.
“This was a terrifying sight. Fishermen thought something had exploded under the sea,” Tandel said. “We immediately contacted the Palghar Fisheries Department and other concerned agencies to ensure the safety of those at sea.”
Preliminary assessments point towards a possible rupture or leakage in a gas pipeline laid beneath the seabed. Officials said the nature and intensity of the bubbling strongly suggest a gas escape from an undersea installation. Technical teams from the Disaster Management Department, Coastal Security agencies and maritime authorities have been rushed to the location for a detailed investigation.
An official involved in the probe said, “Initial indications suggest a gas pipeline leak. The operator of the gas line has been informed, and repair as well as containment measures are being assessed. However, a technical confirmation will come only after sampling and underwater surveys.”
As a precautionary measure, authorities have declared the affected zone a restricted area. Fishermen and boat operators have been strictly instructed to stay away from the spot until further notice. Coast Guard and maritime officials are also monitoring the situation to prevent any untoward incident.
The dramatic visuals triggered a flood of rumours online, ranging from underwater earthquakes to chemical leaks. Addressing the panic, Tandel urged restraint. “Fishermen should not panic or believe rumours circulating on social media. We are in constant touch with the administration, and all necessary safety steps are being taken,” he said.
At present, multiple agencies are conducting water sampling, gas analysis and seabed surveys to identify the exact cause of the incident. Officials have assured that a detailed statement will be issued once the investigation is complete.
