Surat (Gujarat): Alpesh Kathiriya, a fiery Patidar leader and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate for the Varachha assembly constituency, led a surprise raid in the basement parking at Choksi Wadi in Varachha’s Mini Bazaar with his supporters, seizing a large consignment of BJP election material and liquor bottles.

Kathiriya claims the election material belonged to sitting BJP MLA Kumar Kanani, and a complaint has been filed with the Varachha police station for a violation of the Election Code of Conduct.

Alpesh Kathiriya posted a video on social media platforms on the surprise raid at Choksi bazaar in Varachha. A car was found in the basement parking, which was loaded with BJP’s election material for its sitting MLA, Kumar Kanani, meant for distribution in Choksi Wadi. A few meters away from the car, Kathiriya and his supporters found the election material lying along with the liquor bottles.

Yogesh Jadhwani, spokesperson of Surat AAP said, “The last day of the election campaigning ended on November 29 and the political parties are not allowed to campaign in any form whatsoever to woo the voters.  A few traders at Choksi Wadi in Varachha informed Alpesh Kathiriya about the distribution of the BJP pamphlets and liquor bottles. However, a raid was conducted and the material was seized. A case has been lodged in the Varachha police station against the BJP candidate Kumar Kanani for the violation of the Election Code of Conduct”

AAP is pulling all its stops in the Patidar-dominated seats in the diamond district of Varachha, Olpad, Katargam, Karanj, and Kamrej, hoping for a huge victory for the AAP candidates. The AAP has fielded former PAAS leaders including Gujarat AAP chief Gopal Italia on the Katargam seat, Alpesh Kathiriya on the Varachha seat, and Dharmik Malaviya on the Olpad seat respectively.

Two days ago, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal predicted to win seven seats out of the total 12 assembly seats in Surat during his mammoth roadshow and public meeting.
