AHMEDABAD : A disturbing case of online identity theft has surfaced in Ahmedabad, where an unknown cyber fraudster allegedly stole a college student’s photographs to create a fake Instagram profile, highlighting the growing menace of social media impersonation and digital harassment.
The victim, a 20-year-old first-year Bachelor of Arts (BA) student originally from Rajkot, is currently staying at a paying guest accommodation in Ahmedabad’s Navrangpura area. According to police, she discovered the fake account on May 27 while checking the viewers of her Instagram story.
To her shock, the profile displayed her photograph as the profile picture, while several of her personal pictures had been uploaded without her consent under a different username.
“Remove my photos immediately, otherwise I will file a complaint with the police,” the student warned the account holder through another Instagram account after she was unable to contact the profile from her primary account.
Despite the warning, the accused allegedly refused to delete the photographs or deactivate the fake profile.
Left with no option, the student lodged an online complaint through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCCRP) before filing a formal FIR at the Navrangpura police station.
“The case has been registered against an unidentified person, and technical evidence, including the Instagram account’s IP address and other digital trails, is being examined to identify the accused,” police sources said.
