Ahmedabad, Gujarat — While the world grapples with the escalating crisis of plastic pollution, Ahmedabad is quietly but powerfully emerging as a beacon of innovation, demonstrating how a city can not only manage its waste but transform it into valuable urban assets. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC)’s proactive approach, particularly through its Solid Waste Management Department, is setting a remarkable precedent, turning discarded plastic into everything from park benches to a blueprint for a circular economy.
“We believe that waste isn’t just a problem; it’s a resource waiting to be unleashed,” declared a senior official from the AMC’s Solid Waste Management Department. “Our vision is to make Ahmedabad a truly zero-waste city, and plastic recycling is a cornerstone of that ambition.” This ethos is evident in the comprehensive Plastic Waste Management Facility Project, implemented on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) basis. This initiative meticulously handles the separate collection, transportation, and treatment of the city’s daily plastic waste, ensuring that valuable materials are diverted from landfills.
The most tangible symbol of this green revolution can be seen in the city’s parks and public spaces: robust, weather-resistant benches crafted entirely from recycled plastic. Each bench, designed to seat three people and withstand up to 400 kg of weight, is made from 50 kg of recycled multi-layered plastic. These innovative benches are engineered to endure Ahmedabad’s intense heat, capable of withstanding temperatures up to 70 degrees Celsius, and are even used for insulation purposes.
Beyond the benches, Ahmedabad is pushing the boundaries of plastic recycling. Plastic bottle crusher machines have been strategically installed at over six locations across the city, providing citizens with convenient points to dispose of their plastic bottles. These crushed bottles are then repurposed into a surprising array of items, including clothing, jeans, and other recycled plastic products. “It’s incredible to see how a simple plastic bottle can come back as something we wear,” remarked Rina Shah, a resident who regularly uses the crusher machines. “It makes you think twice about just throwing things away.”
Further bolstering its commitment to a greener future, Ahmedabad has launched a groundbreaking initiative based on the ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ (RRR) theme. A fleet of seven mobile RRR vans, one for each zone, now traverses the city’s societies, collecting unused household items. Old clothes, shoes, books, toys, furniture, and even electrical items are given a second life through this program. “The RRR vans are fantastic,” said Suresh Mehta, a retired teacher. “I had so many old books and clothes that were still good, but I didn’t know what to do with them. Now, they can be reused by someone else, and it feels good to contribute to less waste.” This campaign is significantly reducing the volume of waste reaching dump sites, simultaneously conserving natural resources and accelerating Ahmedabad’s journey towards becoming a zero-waste city.
Looking ahead, the AMC is set to launch another ambitious initiative on World Environment Day, June 5, 2025: the installation of cloth bag vending machines. These machines will be strategically placed in seven of the city’s busiest vegetable and fruit markets, areas traditionally prone to high plastic bag usage. The goal is to encourage citizens to embrace reusable cloth bags as a sustainable alternative. “We want to make it as easy as possible for people to choose cloth over plastic,” explained an AMC spokesperson. “By making affordable cloth bags readily available, especially where plastic use is prevalent, we aim to foster a lasting shift in consumer behaviour.”
