Ahmedabad | Gujarat — Ahmedabad to host Commonwealth Games 2030 — A moment of immense pride for India as the Commonwealth Games Executive Board has officially nominated Ahmedabad as the host city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games (CWG). The final decision will be announced during the Commonwealth Games meeting in Glasgow on November 26.

India faced competition from Nigeria for hosting rights, but the Executive Board has indicated that Nigeria will be supported for the 2034 Games, giving India a clear edge for 2030.

India edges past Nigeria in race to host CWG 2030

In a major announcement, Commonwealth Sport released a statement confirming the Executive Board’s decision to recommend Ahmedabad as the preferred host city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games. If confirmed, this will mark India’s second time hosting the event — the first being in New Delhi in 2010.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed pride on social media, saying,“Heartiest congratulations to every citizen of India on Commonwealth Association’s approval of India’s bid to host the Commonwealth Games 2030 in Ahmedabad. It is a grand endorsement of PM Narendra Modi’s relentless efforts to place India on the world sports map.”He further highlighted that the Modi government’s focus on world-class infrastructure and sports talent development has transformed India into a “marvel of a sports destination.”

Modi Cabinet and IOA give green signal

The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, had earlier approved India’s bid to host the Games. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) had also given its approval in August this year.

With Canada withdrawing from the race, India’s chances have significantly strengthened. Last month, a Commonwealth Sport delegation led by Director Darren Hall visited Ahmedabad’s sports venues and held discussions with Gujarat government officials to assess infrastructure readiness.

The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) will take the final call in Glasgow on November 26, following the review of inspection reports.

Economic boost and global exposure for Gujarat

If selected, Ahmedabad’s hosting of the Commonwealth Games 2030 is expected to bring major economic and social benefits. Over 72 nations are set to participate, bringing together athletes, officials, media personnel, and tourists from across the globe.

This influx is projected to generate substantial revenue for local businesses, boost tourism, and create employment across multiple sectors — including sports science, logistics, media, event management, and transportation.

According to experts, “Ahmedabad is an ideal host city that offers world-class stadiums, state-of-the-art training facilities, and a vibrant sporting culture.” The Narendra Modi Stadium, the world’s largest cricket arena, proved its mettle during the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Final, showcasing India’s ability to stage mega global events seamlessly.

Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships boost Ahmedabad’s credentials

Earlier this year, Ahmedabad successfully hosted the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships (August 24–30), which featured 291 athletes from 30 countries, including Tokyo Olympic medalist Mirabai Chanu. The event’s success has strengthened Ahmedabad’s reputation as a world-class sporting hub.

India’s global sporting ambitions: Eyes on 2036 Olympics

India’s ambition to become a global sports powerhouse doesn’t stop at CWG 2030. The country has also submitted a bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games, reinforcing its commitment to elevating its international sporting profile.

So far, India has hosted three major multi-sport events — the 1951 and 1982 Asian Games and the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi. Hosting CWG 2030 in Ahmedabad would mark a new chapter in India’s sporting legacy and further solidify its place on the global stage.
