AHMEDABAD: In a shocking incident that has sent alarm across the police department, Joint Commissioner of Police (JCP) Sharad Singhal was seriously injured after being attacked during a Crime Branch operation in the Chandola Lake area of Ahmedabad. The accused, attempting to evade arrest in an illegal arms trafficking case, stabbed the senior officer during interrogation, triggering a violent confrontation in which police retaliatory firing left the accused injured.
The operation began after Crime Branch officials apprehended Kaleem Sheikh, a resident of Isanpur and a known history-sheeter, in connection with illegal arms supply. During questioning by JCP Sharad Singhal and Police Inspector I.N. Ghasura, the accused suddenly turned aggressive.
“The accused had concealed a knife and launched a sudden attack on the officers during interrogation,” a senior police official said.
In the attack, JCP Sharad Singhal suffered a deep injury to his hand. As the situation escalated, the officer fired from his service revolver in self-defence, striking the accused in the leg. Both were immediately rushed to the Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad for treatment.
Police officials confirmed that the accused was involved in over 30 serious criminal cases, including murder, attempt to murder, robbery and extortion. A total of four weapons were recovered from his possession during the operation.
“Such attacks on police officers will be dealt with strictly. The accused has a long criminal record and was already under surveillance,” another officer stated.
Following the incident, security was tightened in the Chandola Lake area, and Crime Branch teams intensified searches to ensure no further threat remained in the locality.
The attack has raised serious concerns within the police force about the risks faced during high-risk interrogations, with senior officials reviewing operational protocols for handling violent offenders.
