Surat : The Adani Group is gearing up to commission its ambitious Kutch Copper Limited project in Mundra, Gujarat, marking a significant step towards strengthening India’s copper production capabilities.

The project, which encompasses a greenfield copper refinery with an impressive annual capacity of 1 million tonnes, is set to be launched in two phases, with the first phase, boasting a capacity of 500KT, scheduled for commissioning in March 2024.

The Kutch Copper Limited project is poised to become a game-changer in the copper industry, promising to cater to the rising demand for this essential metal in India. The copper plant will not only produce copper cathode and copper rod but will also generate valuable by-products, including gold, silver, nickel, and selenium.

Additionally, the complex will be a source of sulfuric acid, which holds significance in various industries such as fertilizers, detergents, pharmaceuticals, paper production, sugar bleaching, water treatment, and more.

Copper is a vital material underpinning infrastructure development, electrical equipment manufacturing, power transmission, and renewable energy sectors. India’s ambitious goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070 is expected to drive up the demand for copper even further. However, the country’s domestic copper resources are limited, making it heavily reliant on imports. The Kutch Copper Limited project is set to become a prominent player in the industry, offering greater control over the supply chain and significantly reducing dependence on scarce copper resources.

Copper holds the third position among industrial metals, following steel and aluminum. Surprisingly, per capita copper consumption in India stands at a mere 0.6 kg, emphasizing the enormous growth potential within the country. The Kutch Copper project has the capability to revitalize the recent decline in copper exports from India. Equipped with state-of-the-art zero liquid discharge technology and carbon capture equipment, the greenfield copper refinery is poised to make a mark in the global markets.

The project extends its benefits beyond copper production. Adani Cements will effectively utilize the by-products of the copper plant, such as silica and hematite, as crucial ingredients in normal Portland cement production. Moreover, the silver produced by the project will find its way into solar manufacturing processes. The Adani Group’s Green Hydrogen project is set to leverage essential materials like copper and silver sourced from Kutch Copper.
