114 Mothers Donate Breast Milk To Help Vulnerable Newborns In Surat

SURAT :  In a powerful display of community service, 114 lactating mothers donated 5,380 ml of breast milk at Surat’s 33rd Human Milk Donation Camp, helping provide vital nutrition to sick and premature newborns.

The camp was organised by the Surat Pediatric Association Charitable Trust (SPACT) at Agrasen Bhavan on September 17, with support from the Department of Pediatrics at New Civil Hospital and several NGOs.

The donated milk will undergo scientific sterilisation and refrigeration before being supplied to newborns admitted to neonatal intensive care units. According to organisers, properly preserved milk can be safely used for up to six months.

The event was attended by UNICEF Gujarat officials Dr Kanupriya Singhal and Dr Narayan Gaonkar, along with Medical Superintendent Dr Parul Vadgama and Surat Municipal Corporation Assistant Municipal Commissioner Dr Gayatriben Jariwala.

SPACT said the initiative has been supporting human milk donation in Surat for more than a decade.

“Mother’s milk is an unparalleled source of nutrition, and donating breast milk is one of the most meaningful forms of charity,” the organisers said.

Donor mothers and volunteers were also thanked for contributing to the initiative aimed at improving the health and survival prospects of vulnerable newborns.
