SURAT: As uncertainty continues over a possible revival of air connectivity between Surat and the Mumbai region, passengers from Surat have urged Air India Express to consider launching flights to Mumbai instead of Navi Mumbai, arguing that the city’s established airport connectivity would be more practical for travellers.
At present, bookings for flights between Navi Mumbai and Surat are reportedly not visible on major flight booking portals, adding to uncertainty over the proposed connectivity. Passengers said that if Air India Express is planning to restart services, it should prioritise a Mumbai-Surat route.
“Mumbai has always been closely connected with Surat through business, employment and family ties. A direct flight to Mumbai would be much more useful for passengers than having to travel to Navi Mumbai,” said a Surat-based businessman.
Another passenger said airport accessibility and total travel time should be key considerations before deciding the route. “For traders and professionals who frequently travel to Mumbai, convenience is extremely important. A Mumbai flight would save time and provide better onward connectivity,” the passenger said.
Mumbai Airport is among India’s major aviation hubs and offers extensive domestic and international connections. Passengers believe this could make a Mumbai-Surat service particularly beneficial for travellers requiring onward flights.
“Students, working professionals and families also travel frequently between Surat and Mumbai. A direct flight would strengthen an already important connection between the two cities,” said another passenger.
Surat, a major textile, diamond and industrial hub, has long maintained strong commercial and social links with Mumbai. Travellers said a regular Mumbai-Surat flight could support business activity while providing a faster alternative to road and rail travel.
Passengers have appealed to Air India Express to consider their demand while planning future services from Surat.
“The decision should ultimately be based on passenger convenience, accessibility and actual travel requirements. Mumbai-Surat connectivity has been a long-standing need,” a passenger said.
