Gen-Z Effect: Gujarat Universities Offer Free WiFi, Paid Internships

AHMEDABAD : What if a university offered students more than lectures, exams and a degree? In Gujarat, that question is already being answered—with free WiFi, paid internships and scholarships designed to reward active campus life.

As Gen-Z increasingly expects digital access, practical experience and equal opportunities alongside traditional education, universities in Gujarat are reworking their student-focused initiatives. The shift comes amid growing recognition that simply offering a degree may not be enough to keep today’s students engaged with campus.

At Gujarat University, preparations are underway to make high-speed WiFi available free across the entire campus. Students will be able to access the internet not just in classrooms but also in gardens, canteens and hostels.

Vice Chancellor Dr Jagdish Joshi said the university is expanding technology-based facilities as students increasingly depend on digital learning.

“Every campus has internet facilities, but the entire campus is not equipped with WiFi. So the entire campus is going to be equipped with WiFi,” Joshi said.

Students will register using their mobile and enrolment numbers and access the network after verification.

Now, students can earn while they learn

The bigger attraction could be Gujarat University’s ‘Earn While You Learn’ initiative. Students will get an opportunity to work as professors’ assistants or participate in research, replacing the four-credit skill development programme in semester six.

“They will not only gain experience but will also get a certificate, credit and proper remuneration,” Joshi said.

The objective is to bridge the gap between classroom learning and industry requirements while giving students practical exposure and an opportunity to earn.

Gujarat Vidyapeeth takes another route

Meanwhile, Gujarat Vidyapeeth is using scholarships to encourage students to become more actively involved in campus activities.

Dean Ajay Parikh said the selection process considers the student’s overall engagement rather than marks alone. Students with a 7.0 CGPA can enter the selection process, after which their academic record, campus participation and work during the year are assessed.

Of 1,039 eligible students, 379 were shortlisted in the second phase, while presentations from 139 students were sent to the selection committee.

Selected students receive reimbursement of tuition and practical fees, with higher fees attracting a corresponding scholarship amount.

The message from Gujarat’s campuses is clear: Gen-Z wants connectivity, skills, income and recognition—not just a certificate at the end of four years. And universities are beginning to redesign campus life accordingly.
